Benicar, Azor, Tribenzor (olmesartan medoxomil) lawsuits mounting

Legal troubles for Daiichi Sankyo, the manufacturer of the medication Benicar, continue to mount as Benicar lawsuits are filed against its U.S division and partner Forest Laboratories. The first wrongful death lawsuit was also filed against the pharmaceutical giant in New Jersey in October after one patient became so debilitated from weight loss associated with the medication he passed away. Suits are being filed in the Federal District Court of New Jersey where Japanese multinational corporation Daiichi Sankyo has its U.S. headquarters.

Benicar and similar blood pressure medications like Benicar HCT, Azor and Tribenzor containing the active ingredient olmesartan medoxomil have been prescribed to over 10 million people since it was developed in 1995. In 2012 alone, there were 1.9 million prescriptions written for Benicar, which is the third-highest-selling blood pressure medication on the market.

FDA warnings on Benicar

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2013 for drugs like Benicar and similar medications containing olmesartan. Warning labels are now required to alert prescribing physicians about the risk of chronic diarrhea associated with the drug.
