BMW 3-Series wagon, sedan, coupe, convertible, M3 coupe and convertible Takata airbag recall

In the wake of a nationwide recall for millions of cars with defective airbags BMW has issued its third recall for vehicles it sold between 1999 and 2006. Airbags produced by Japanese company Takata have been shown to have a number of issues which led to hundreds of injuries and possibly 4 deaths. BMW vehicles subject to the Takata recall include:

  • 2000-2005 3-Series wagon and sedan,
  • 2000-2006 3-Series coupe and convertible, and
  • 2001-2006 M3 coupe and convertible.

These recalled vehicles are all part of BMW’s E46 generation of cars and total 574,000 vehicles in the United States. The malfunction in the Takata airbags arises from high temperatures and humidity causing moisture to permeate the metal canisters which enclose the airbag inflators. These inflators deploy the airbag with a chemical reaction utilizing explosive chemicals which can become unstable when exposed to moisture.
The chemical destabilization of the airbag inflator can force deployment during minor accidents when an airbag would not normally be activated.

Furthermore, the corrupted chemicals can cause the inflator to come under great enough pressure to induce its metal enclosure to burst, disbursing metal shrapnel at the vehicle’s driver and occupants.

Have Takata airbags been installed in my BMW?

BMW vehicles slated for recall include the 2000-2005 3-Series wagon and sedan, 2000-2006 3-Series coupe and convertible, and the 2001-2006 M3 coupe and convertible. These are all part of BMW’s E46 generation of cars and total 574,000 vehicles in the United States

Last year BMW issued a recall of 240,000 vehicles in the U.S. to replace the driver side airbags in the E46 generation and have since issued a recall to replace the passenger side airbag of the E46 BMW 3 Series models as well.
