Recent news reports have uncovered startling information about Dr. Charles Akoda. Federal court documents obtained by NBC4 Washington, Akoda entered the country in 1991 on a non-immigrant visa and repeatedly used fraudulent Social Security numbers and fake information throughout the ’90s to practice medicine and get into a residency program in the U.S.
Federal prosecutors claim Akoda was dismissed from a residency program at a New Jersey hospital in 2000 after administrators discovered he was using a fake Social Security number. In 2011, Akoda was able to secure a Maryland medical license using fake credentials and began practicing at Prince George’s County Hospital Center until 2015.
The man known as Dr. Charles Akoda is currently serving a six-month sentence in federal prison and will serve and an additional six-months of home confinement after his release. According to the Maryland State Board of Medical Physicians, Akoda will only pay a $100 fine.
