Victims finally compensated years after sex abuse by teachers

St. George's School settles teacher sex abuse lawsuitElite Rhode Island prep school St. George’s School recently agreed to settle sexual assault lawsuits with dozens of past students claiming to be victims of abuse at the hands of former school staff. Victims allege the abuse dated back as late as the 1970’s and continued up until around 2000.

Located in Middletown, Rhode Island, the posh boarding school educated America’s wealthiest families like the Astors and Vanderbilts. The $58,000 a year institution is renowned for its sprawling campus, known as The Hill, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Sexual assault victims suffered deep emotional turmoil

According to reports, six faculty members at St. George’s School were involved with the abuse of at least 26-former students. At the center of the events was the school’s principal, Tony Zane, who told at least one victim she was suffering from a mental disorder and suggested the victim deal with the atrocities herself in lieu of alerting law enforcement or seeking administrative punishment.

The undisclosed compensation will help school sexual assault victims get the counseling and services needed to cope with the repeated abuse they suffered in their formative years as they try to put their lives back together. While money alone cannot undo the torment suffered by sex abuse victims, our society none the less prescribes it as the mechanism by which to punish wrongdoers and to try and help individuals become whole again.
